Newbie Event

Hey All,

I would like to try and host a newbie event up at CND but I will need a little bit of help organizing it.

I feel that a newbie event is needed for a couple of reasons.

1) Business in RL tend to do one of two things
a) cater to the older players and spend less time trying to
acquire new ones; or
b) spend most their efforts on acquiring new people and
forgetting about the regulars.

2) I believe an event held for newbies up here will generate great publicity for CND among the growing newbie population.

In the past, I have held two other newbie events both of which were successful. They were both a bit of a treasure hunt/ tp run event and prizes were awarded to all. It only cost me and my society about 200PED and the results were very rewarding. For me, it's always feels better to give than receive and that is what I try to do when I can afford it.

So here's the idea:

Since we have an event system that works decently, advertise an event for a certain day. Posts need to be made on EF, EP and RP about the event. The posts should be made at least 2 weeks before the event. THe event and the posts should contain the folllowing:

1) the event can be a competition that is set up like the weekend mini comps are. Most loot wins. The prize could be as cheap as a full newbie hunting starter kit (i.e. Full settler armor, opalo, 5k in ammo, fap-5).
2) The event will be set up for 20 - 40 newbies (newbies for this competition can be defined as someone with agility <= 30). Each participant will be scanned prior to competition.
3) I think the best dome for the newbies to do this event in is dome 2 or 3 (i forgot which had the low level snabes and exos). However, I don't know if you can just close off one dome so maybe just do 1 - 5 and they can hunt the others at their own risk.
4) This is the tricky part. Whoever else wants to help sponsor, we can all gather a pool of PED to cover transportation costs. For instance, Ripture can be the flight service for the event. The pool of money from donators would cover his costs for the flights. The posts made for the event will advertise the pickup time for the event. The participants can sign up on the forums. Ripper can scan each participant before he flys up with them. After the event is over, Ripper can fly them back down for free also or they can stay up here at their own expense. Their choice.

I know this isn't completely fool proof and I think I have left out some details. However, I think this would be great word of mouth advertising for CND among the newbies. A lot of these current events will never be plausible for newbies so we need to do something for those looking to futher their future in PE and CND.

Anyway, let me know what you all think of this idea. I will be willing to personally donate 100PED to this event.

Rob

By the way, sorry for the ideas being all over the place. I was in my Business Management Simulation class so I didn't have a lot of time to write it out in more detail. It was on my mind and kept bugging me to get out in the forum so I had to let it loose.

Good Idea

I think its a great idea. I've been holding onto some pixie/goblin parts that I would be willing to donate to the cause. I have M/F Goblin Shins & M/F Pixie Arms, M/F Face, F Gloves and M/F Harness if it would be of any help for prizes.

I have quite the prize pool building for my next riddle event, but this is a much cooler way to do a newbie event. Rob, next time we see each other in game, lets chat about me getting behind you in these events and maybe me no longer doing my riddle quests, or maybe we could run them in conjuntion with each other to try and draw a larger crowd?

I gotta hand it to ya, Rob, you take a lot of initiative. The community wouldn't be the same without ya! Good job.

But on this event, I gotta disagree...

My personal opnion is that this is a waste of ped. I agree that it is important to bring n00bs to CND, but avatars who cannot even afford the flight, to hunt for hours etc. will not generate any revenue. Maybe slightly for ND, but not for the shopowners or anyone else.

If we can get low mid-level, mid-level and mid-level+ players to come, the benefits and revenues would be greater.
If you bring people up who doesn't have a dime to spend, then there is no point in sponsoring.

For the time being there is a lot less to explore on CND than on Eudoria, so the challenge is to keep people up on CND for longer periods of time. I agree that events are the way to go, but unfortunately that excludes the n00bs (for the most part).

On the other hand, the n00bs who spawn on CND are critical to get a variety of players. It is in everyones interest to make sure that they get started and thrive on CND. Slick is working on that, and I volunteered to do some mentoring and get people going. "Long term investment".

No disrespect, Rob. You know I appreciate what you do. These are just my 2pec...

Thanks for the constructive criticism Stoffer. I do agree with you that nOObs don't generate a lot of money at first. However, just like I did in the beginning, some nOObs wait a couple of days before depositing to see if it would be a worthwhile investment.

It is very true that out of 20 newbies you'll probably only get 10 that actually stay and 5 that might start depositing. But those five will remember what a good time they had and will try to frequent CND more often. Also, those 20 newbies will go down to Calypso again and tell all their newbie friends about what a great time they had and all the cool stuff they got and things they saw. This process will continue and eventually give CND a good reputation from the new players.

Another reason why I even brought this idea up was becasue we need to help fix CND's repuatation. I don't really know why people don't enjoy it up here cause I love it. However, for some reason there is a tarnished image of CND among the mid and uber level players. Maybe not everyone feels that way but there are a few and unfortunately they like to cause trouble for CND on the forums. The newbies then read this stuff and they decide to not go there either. So really, its just a recurring cycle which needs to be broken. SO, maybe the best way for it to be broken is from the bottom up. Just an idea.

Thanks LW for the kind words.

I wanted to point out one other thing too. I know this is event is just singling out a certain part of the population of PE. I have been reading a lot of the thread about CND and what people think about this or that. I really don't care about what the naysayers have because it seems as if those people are naysayers on just about everything. But I do notice that htose tyhat are giving advice are asking for a few things. And that is why I came up with this idea.

I noticed that a lot of newbies are interested in exploring what CND has to offer and would like to check it out but they have heard horror stories about "All the high level Mobs" and stuff like that. Well, if they have the opportunity to see that not all the domes are high level, then mayeb they might just stick around a bit. People are afraid of being PK'd all the time by all the ubers running around. Honeslty, to date, I have gotten PK'd once by Chainfire cause I told him he couldn't do it. And, I haven't seen a ton of ubers around just looking for the opportunity to PK someone. Hell, the ubers that I have met up here are really nice. But, this is the common misconception about CND and we need it to stop. All the stupid critics of CND are passing around this bad rep to the new players and the only way for the new players to realize it is bull is to see it for themselves.

So, yes there should be events held for everyone and not just one particular faction but I think to also make it a bit more fair for everyone, there should be some specialized events this way it caters to everyone.
