Mining trends

When mining, is you find a small deposit, is it safe to say there is a larger deposit somewhere in the area? Or does mining just come in spots here and there?

Basically I'm asking, is mining as random as loot, or is there any technical sense to mining?

I came to the conclusion that mining was pretty random, because at CND, I was hunting. I hadn't had a global yet (It was my first global), and I was hunting.. And hunting, and hunting. Before then, I was an ore miner. My EnMatter skills were literally at 0. I was almost out of ammo, and I was on the verge of giving up all together, and I just figured "What the hell" and dropped a single EnMatter probe.

Bingo, I had hit something. I figured "What the hell could I have hit with my enmatter skills all at 0?" and I hit the beacon. It was a 96 PED crude oil deposit! I was so excited. I had over 1000 in my rifle and laser, so it's pretty obvious I was going for a hunting global, and it simply blew my mind that I had hit a global.

I'd LIKE to get into mining, but it seems it's just too random. Is there ANY input about mining?
